Garage door cables work alongside the springs to lift and lower the door smoothly. There are two types: lift cables (which run from the bottom of the door up to the drums) and safety cables (which thread through extension springs to contain them if they snap). When a lift cable breaks or slips off the drum, the door drops on one side and can no longer move safely. At Goodies, we replace cables in pairs using galvanized steel aircraft cable — far stronger than the standard cables that come from the factory. We also inspect and rewind the drums to ensure even cable tension on both sides, preventing premature re-wear.
We always replace both cables at once. They're the same age and under the same load — if one failed, the other is near its limit. Replacing both now is a fraction of the cost of a second service call.
